Sitting for too long linked to heart disease

Monday, July 25, 2010

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) — In the past, researchers have linked sitting too long with diabetes, strokes and even heart disease.
But a new study may have finally figured out just how long is too long.

A report, published in the JAMA Cardiology finds that 10 hours is the magic number.

Researchers studied more than 700,000 people over the course of 11 years and found that sitting or lying down for more than 10 hours a day increases your chance of having heart problems. And the longer you sit after that, the greater your risk.

Even though that number may seem high, many of us sit that long each day and we may not even realize it.

People who work in offices or behind desks probably sit for about 7 hours a day.
If you take an hour lunch, you’re probably sitting while you eat as well.
Take into consideration the time it takes to drive to and from work, lunch, or on any errands you may run and that can add another hour or so.
And once you get home, you’re probably sitting when you eat dinner, watching TV, surfing the internet or just on your phone.

So as you can see sitting for 10 hours is very realistic.

If you sit for hours at work, try standing at your desk for a while.
If you need to tell a co-worker something, get up and go to his/her office instead of sending an e-mail.
And when you get home, try to do some physical activity instead of plopping down in front of the TV.
