Richmond County Mosquito Control says they would like a bigger budget to monitor for Zika

News 12 NBC 26 / Thursday, July 21, 2016
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) –As a veteran, Augusta Commissioner Bill Lockett remembers all of his travels in the military and with Fort Gordon right here, he is concerned about the Zika Virus coming to Augusta.

“We still don’t know all of the ramifications of it,” Lockett said.

With the Olympics coming in Rio too, Lockett wants to be sure Augusta is prepared for all of the travelers coming in and out of Georgia. Richmond County Mosquito Control says they do have a plan, but it’s not specific to the virus.

“It’s not a Zika plan, it’s not a West Nile Virus plan, but we manage and investigate any mosquito vectors or disease as they come up,” Mosquito Control said.

“Mosquito control and that staff over there is doing everything they can they are on top of the game I think,” Augusta Commissioner Marion Williams said.

If a virus does pop up they survey yards in the area to see if mosquitoes are being bred there or somewhere else.

“We handle 25 to 30 complaints every night,” Mosquito Control said.

Mosquito Control would like to have more money for someone to monitor for Zika and West Nile even more. They say right now they are tasked with a heavy burden.

“It doesn’t appear like Congress is going to do anything soon in this regard,” Lockett said.

Augusta City Administrator Janice Allen Jackson says she is open to discussion on adding more money to the mosquito control budget.
