Augusta spending millions on contractors for stormwater program

Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2016

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) –This is Johnnie Hall’s fourth year living on Ann Street near Lake Olmstead in Augusta and she’s noticed some stormwater problems.

“In areas of this road it is a problem, it’s a bad problem down here at the end,” Hall said.

When it rains the ditches fill with rain, some of her neighbor’s yards flood.

“They get stopped up, well that water’s not going to go anywhere,” Hall said.

Augusta’s Engineering Department says Ann Street is one of many the city is designing fixes for. It’s expected to cost $50,000 dollars, something Johnnie wishes the city would have told her.

“You’re the first knowledge I’ve had of it,” Hall said.

Augusta Commissioners took additional steps this week to bring contractors on board with the stormwater program. Over 3 million of your stormwater fee money will pay them to clean ponds, mow grass, and clean sewers out.

“I guarantee you it’s got to help, it’s got to be what we need,” Commissioner Grady Smith said.

Commissioners Grady Smith and Wayne Guilfoyle, both contractors themselves, say this will save the city money because the city won’t have to buy equipment and teach workers how to do specialized tasks.

Guilfoyle says for every 20 employees the city has to bring in house costs them 1 million dollars.

“I wanna see somebody out here talking to us and letting us know this is what we are going to do,” Hall said.
